In the post apocalyptic world, the cities will be strewn with rubble. Combat operations (whether from house-to-house fighting or large scale bombardment) devastate population centers. Even non-combat catastrophic events such as a zombie plague would leave behind scattered debris resulting from mass panic, uncontrolled accidental fires and neglect of safety systems (deteriorating gas lines for example). Post apocalypse, many urban areas would look, well, simply apocalyptic.

Piles of rubble become the new scenery across the urban landscape. Spikes of building components (building blocks, support I-beams, timbers, re-bar, pipes, and so on) rise out of the debris, frequently giving the piles a look like the skeletal carcasses of large creatures. Often fire has scoured the ruins, leaving a layer of ash clinging to the rubble.

In game terms these piles can provide protective cover for survivors moving among the ruins. Scattered onto roads, they also become obstacles to movement, particularly for vehicles.

Worse, the piles of rubble provide potential ambush sites for the survivors.

These terrain pieces are designed for 25 to 28mm scale miniature war games. They range in size from 5 to 7 inches (125 to 175 mm) in length.

I have been busy recently completing a multi-part commission order. Among the 25mm scale terrain pieces is this set of four underground missile silos.

The overall complex consists of four separate silo stations. Each station controls two missile silos and has its own access hatch leading to an independent launch command center.

Each station includes one silo with the protective hatches open and the missile raised to a launch position in preparation for the final launch commands.

The individual silo stations measures about 6 x 6 inches (150 x 150 mm).

These makeshift barricades provide defensive positions in all sorts of situations. They are often thrown together using whatever material is handy: rough sheets of metal scrap, sections of pipes, storage crates, rough lumber, and all sorts of other material that may be found in the ruins of an urban landscape.

Their purpose is to provide some minimal amount of cover for forces defending territory. Often time is a critical factor and the construction is simple and quick.

Theses terrain pieces are scaled for 25 to 28 mm war gaming miniatures. The pieces measure about 4 inches (100 mm) in width.

They would fit nicely into any urban battlefield or post apocalyptic landscape.

Here are some more heavily damaged 25-28 mm scale urban terrain pieces that could be used any city battlefield. These pieces are slightly larger size from the previous batch.

The first is the remains of a low corner wall. The wall face has been heavily damaged from both direct fire and flying debris.

The second ruin is similar, but there are signs that someone has attempted to make some hasty defensive changes. A metal panel has been erected across the large gaping hole blown through the wall for some make-shift protection. A few building blocks have been scrounged from the rubble and set atop the wall for a tiny bit more protection.

Industrial settings offer plenty of opportunities for creating challenging battlegrounds in war gaming. In addition to large structures and equipment, there is always a need for smaller bits of scenery to act as obstacles or to provide additional cover for your troops.

Here are some examples of piles of industrial pipes. These represent large pipe segments that have been simply stacked for storage until needed.

Several sizes of pipes have been used to vary the height of the terrain.

The pipes show signs of surface corrosion and weathering from being exposed to the elements over time. Dirt, leaves and gravel have gradually piled up along the bottom pipes, even flowing into the open ends.

Various bits of minor industrial debris lie scattered about the base of the pipes: broken lumber, short section of a rusting I-beam, metal scraps, even a small dozer blade. It would be possible that the larger pipes offer some concealment to an opponent waiting in hiding for an unsuspecting victim.

It has been a while since I posted and I apologize. Let's get back to some terrain!

Sometimes you just want some terrain to provide cover for your war game miniatures. Or to create obstacles that the troops have to move around. Here are some pieces of rocky terrain. The 28mm space marine miniatures are included for a sense of scale, but the terrain could work with 15 to 30 mm scale figures.

First we have a flat top rock tower. The tower stands about 4-1/2 inches (112 mm) tall. Its base measures 2 x 1-3/4 inches (50 x 45 mm).

Next up is a narrow rock wall. It can be used to form a straight boundary. It measures 2 inches (50 mm) in height and 7-1/2 inches (190 mm) in length.

A variation on the rock wall is this dragon spine serpentine wall. It also stands 2 inches (50 mm) tall and is approximately 7-1/2 inches (190 mm) in length.

Finally, here is a taller mountain wall that is 5-1/2 inches (140 mm) in height. This is good for creating a substantially impenetrable obstacle for most troops.

These terrain pieces are all carved from construction foam which provides for very light terrain that can be transported and stored quite easily. As with most terrain, they can be readily used in a variety of gaming genres including science fiction, fantasy, pulp action adventure, horror and many other.

Defensive Force Field Pylons

Some defense systems incorporate the use of force field generators. These pylons are used to create a force field "fence" for perimeter defense.

They can be placed in a linear series or in a rough circle to surround a position. The effects of crossing the defensive line can range from simple stunning to electrocution or total disintegration!

They can be used in many security situations. They are ideal for establishing a temporary perimeter defense around a battlefield installation such as a forward fire base.

The pylons are useful as well as in more permanent settings such as military bases and secret research facilities.

Designed for use with 25 to 30 mm scale miniatures (28 mm figures are shown in the photos). Each pylon stands about 2 inches (55 mm) tall. The bases measure about 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter.

The tank's surface is pockmarked with multiple small arms fire.

Contents of the storage tank leak out from several spots, including a larger caliber hole. Rust and corrosion marks the surface as well.

In addition to the battle damage to the tank itself, the concrete pad is littered with a variety of debris. Some may be from nearby structures also damaged in the battle, or may simply be accumulated industrial garbage.

These vehicles are from a custom order I just completed. It consists of a squadron of six tactical fighters.

This squadron is planetary based as indicated by the accompanying individual landing pads.

The Tac Fighter is a small single seat fighter with vertical take-off ability.

The fighters are capable of orbital space flight and designed primarily for near planet and surface operations, but could also be carried aboard large space naval vessels to act as a defensive fighter screen.

The Tac Fighters are about 4-1/2 inches (115 mm) in length.

The landing pads are about 6 x 6 inches (155 x 155 mm).

Armaments nest under the belly of the fighter and consist of a single large blast cannon and a triple missile rack.

The fighters are equipped with stands to pose them in flight.

The Tac Fighters would be at home in many science fiction table top war games and role-playing games. They are designed to be compatible with 25 to 28 mm scale miniatures.

These three pieces represent fairly common storage tanks found in industrial production plants, but can be used as fuel depots on military installations.

Each tank has a ladder leading to the top level. Also, each tank is numbered which can be helpful in game play.

The tanks can be used as victory objectives -- send in your troops to set explosive charges to destroy the enemy's fuel reserves. They are pretty versatile and can be used in a variety of miniature war game scenarios.

The 15mm figures are Rebel Miniatures on washer bases.

Switches are thrown; equipment is activated. Ethereal sparks leap about the circular portal! A loud humming sound quickly rises in pitch, passing into the supersonic ranges above normal human capacity. The air inside the gateway seems to split apart, revealing strange new colors as the test subject steps into the mechanism.

So, what have the mad scientists in our research and development section come up with this time? It could be a simple matter transporter. Or perhaps an inter-dimensional portal opening into new weird space.

This apparatus could be found in any experimental laboratory. Or perhaps it's a bit of alien technology being reversed engineered.

This scenery piece is scaled for 25 to 28 mm miniature figures. It can be used in most science fiction war games such as Warhammer 40K™. Or it could be a part of a crazed scientist's efforts to open a bridge for the Lesser Gods in Call of Cthulhu™ or other horror role-playing games.

Portable Power Generator 25-28mm War Game Scenery

Getting power to a remote location such as a temporary battlefield command post or an isolated research colony can be challenging. This portable power generator is designed to be airlifted into such sites.

Sturdy harness rings are located at the four corners of the top of the unit to allow it to be airlifted.

The unit control panel is located at one end, next to the warning sign stating "Danger High Power Area".

Power cables can be connected at the opposite end as needed.

The portable generator can be used in all manners of game settings and makes a perfect terrain objective piece in science fiction war gaming including Warhammer 40K™. It would also work well in pulp action and super hero scenarios.

Industrial Incineration Plant 25-28mm Scale War Game Terrain

A chimney rises above this industrial building terrain piece. Who knows what the incinerator is used for? Perhaps simply burning off waste products from a manufacturing process. Or maybe to destroy the evidence of gruesome experimentation by a mad scientist.

Entrance to the building is by way of a heavy metal door. A security light is positioned above the door. To the left of the door is a sign warning "Authorized Personnel Only Beyond this point."

The facility shows quite a bit of accumulated rust, indicating it has been in operation for some time. The top of the chimney is stained with residue left from the combustion process.

Access to the roof is by an exterior ladder at one end of the building. Alternately, a hatch on the roof allows entry into the interior. A guard rail adds a safety feature to the roof level. An air cooler/purifier unit also sits on the roof.

Designed for 25-28 mm scale miniatures. This scenery piece can be used in many industrial settings. The chimney stands 5 inches (128 mm) tall. The base measures about 6 x 6 inches (150 x 150 mm).

Large Processing Plant With Toxic Storage Vat 25 - 28 mm Terrain

Here is a bit larger terrain piece. This industrial facility consists of a main building plus a large circular open retention vat.

Multiple pipes connect to the main building. Raw materials are pumped from underground storage tanks into the main building. Once processed, the finished product is pumped into another underground holding tank through a different pipe.

The manufacturing process creates a large amount of toxic waste. This by-product is pumped out of the building and in to the large retention tank, spewing toxic fumes into the atmosphere.

A walkway extends from the main building to the access ladder on the opposite side. Why, you may ask would the plant designers incorporate such an obviously dangerous walkway? Well, it's obvious: to provide a great gaming area for your troops to cross while at risk of falling into the toxic stew below!

This piece of scenery can be placed in any industrial setting. It would be acceptable in most science fiction settings as well as pulp action and super hero games. It makes a great central victory objective for attacking forces. Multiple gaming levels are included.

Designed in 25 - 28 mm scale for both table top miniatures war gaming and role-playing games. The base of this terrain piece measures about 12 X 12 inches (305 x 305 mm) square. It is about 4-1/2 inches (115 mm) high.

So, you finally have tracked down your arch nemesis. You know his secret facility is hidden just below your feet. Now, how do you gain access to his lair?

Well, you might try using this entrance! Just get through the armored hatch and follow the stairs downward.

In the high tech battles of the future, airborne assaults will be a major concern for any military force. Here are some air defense weapons systems that can provide protection against such attacks.

The first missile launcher sports two large missiles mounted on either side of the central control pylon. The launcher is designed so the upper central pylon rotates in a 360-degree arc.

The second design folds a total of eight smaller missiles housed in a single rack set atop the pylon. As with the first design, this launcher can pivot 360 degrees.

Here is a large spherical storage tank that can be found in all sorts of industrial settings in miniature war gaming including science fiction, pulp, and historical.

The central structure consists of a globe for storing liquids and gases, built on a core pylon (which also houses internal piping for moving the contents through an underground system).

To add stability to the tank, a series of perimeter support columns help anchor the tank to the ground. Each column is set into its own reinforced footing.

Because of the size of the piece, these storage tanks are normally located out of doors rather than inside factory settings.

This terrain piece is very versatile and can be used in most industrial settings, population centers, and some military installations. It makes a nice victory objective for a raid on a manufacturing plant (for example: penetrate the facility security perimeter and place demolition charges on the storage tank).

This time we're getting out of the laboratory and onto the battle field with an armored watch tower.

The gun tower that can be found protecting important military installations and research sites. Security forces can use the tower for surveillance and defense. Multiple viewing windows allow for 360-degree observation and line of fire. Access is through an armored hatch at the tower's base. An additional hatch is located on the top of the tower.

This type of scenery can be used in a wide variety of science fiction miniatures war games. It can be placed in all sorts of established sites.

Mad Science Pulp Electropulse Cannon 25 - 30 mm

This scenery piece represents a large, heavy fixed weapon. It fires a pulsed narrow-beam of supercharged electrical particles capable of breaching heavily armored vehicles and even lightly shielded starships.

Because of its size, this weapon system must be mounted on a stationary hardpoint and is not usually seen on the open battlefield. It is often deployed as part of the defensive systems on larger military installations, industrial complexes, population centers, and larger starports.

This would do well as a victory objective in many science fiction table top miniatures war games including Warhammer 40K™ and Warmachine™. Or it could be used in a pulp or super hero setting as a prototype weapon of mass destruction created by a mad scientist working toward world domination.

Whatever the game system you are using, this terrain piece will certainly attract some attention on your game table.

Another amazing gizmo from our mad scientist's lab! When activated, a rising hum builds, the twin armatures spin ever faster around the core generator. Bolts of unearthly lightning leap from the spinning globes to the central capacitor! Can our inventor control the powers he has unleashed?

This scenery piece is an nice touch in any crazed scientist's lair. It could be used in may pulp science fiction settings. And although not exactly steampunk or victorian science fiction, it would not look out of place there as well.

Designed for 25-30 mm scale miniatures, the base measures approximately 3 x 5 inches (70 x 125 mm). The piece stands about 3-3/4 inches (96 mm) tall.

15mm Science Fiction Heavy Gun Turret

This time I decided to try a piece for a smaller game scale: 15mm. This smaller scale appears to be gaining in popularity for some table top miniature war games, particularly where you want to field larger troop formations.

This heavily armored gun turret sports a large cannon. This type of weapon system is not easily transportable from one battlefield to another, but is designed to be erected in a static location. It can be used as a major defensive weapon protecting a military installation, population center, or starport.

The base of this terrain piece measures about 3 x 3 inches (76 x 76 mm). The turret stands 2-1/2 inches tall (65 mm).

The combat figures in the photos for size comparison are from the Rebel Miniatures 15mm series. The details of the miniatures are pretty remarkable for such a small scale.

Power Generator for Science Fiction or Pulp Adventure

What new source of power is this scientist working on? It looks like a large undertaking with plenty of technology. The main generator consists of a long cylindrical turbine. Numerous control consoles nestle against the generator. A morass of conduits draw the power from the main generator to the vertical containment chamber for storage.

Such a prototype can be the basis of all sorts of interesting miniature war game or role-playing adventures. Perhaps it is hidden in the secret arctic base of a pulp villain hoping to use the technology in his bid to become supreme ruler of the world. Or maybe it is part of an Imperial research facility set in a futuristic science fiction setting such as Warhammer 40,000™.

Suitable for 25-30 mm miniatures gaming. The base of this terrain piece is about 6 x 12 inches (150 x 305 mm) and stands about 3-1/2 inches (87 mm) tall.

Industrial Processing Plant

Industrial sites always seem to be a natural setting for firefights in miniatures games like Warhammer 40,000™. The more varied the scenery, the better. You really can't have too much heavy equipment to act as victory objectives or simply for cover. And add to the mix the possibility that the contents might react very badly to stray weapons fire and you increase the tension on the battlefield.

This terrain piece consists of three processing tanks woven together with multiple pipes between them. Minor corrosion and leaks add to the detailing.

They stand about 5 inches (128 mm) tall. The base measures 9 x 3 inches (230 mm x 76 mm).

Cthulhu Elder God Stature

This strange Lovecraftian monument could find a place in any long-forgotten city, a cult's hidden lair, or on some alien world. Just viewing it may cause your players to suffer an insanity attack.

It can be used to represent the Great Cthulhu himself or any of the unmentionable horrors from beyond space. Works exceptionally well in a Call of Cthulhu™ role-playing setting, even if the elder god doesn't actually show up. Or placed on the board of a science fiction miniatures game such as Warhammer 40K™, it can spook your players into worrying about just what really makes up the enemy's forces.

Buzz Bomb Rocket & Launch Site

Inspired by the V-1 flying bombs that were part of the German advanced-tech arsenal in World War II, this piece represents a large rocket installation.

The launcher stands about 8" high. The buzz bomb is a separate piece that can be removed from the launcher. The rocket measures about 7-1/4" in overall length.

Makes a great victory objective. Can be used in a wide range of historical gaming periods from the gritty action Pulps of the 1930s to the far future science fiction battlefields such as Warhammer 40K™.

Large Cannon with Gun Turret

Even in the far future, big guns will have their place on the battlefield. Usually designed for defensive fire in protection of major military complexes and other significant sites, these heavily armored turrets are designed to throw up a lot of firepower through their larger weapons systems.

This particular example sports a single barrel heavy cannon. Additional weapons systems are added to act as close-up infantry/vehicle suppression. The turret on the top is a twin-barrel heavy machine gun. (This turret actually rotates a full 360 degrees.) Two smaller machine guns are mounted in weapons pods just below the viewing ports on either side of the main turret.

Crew access is via the double-door hatch at the rear of the main turret, although there also is a small hatch located on top of the upper turret. This gun stands about 3-3/4 inches (95 mm) tall. The base is 4-3/4 inches (120 mm) in diameter.

Watch Tower Rusted Hulk

I have tried a different finish on this piece. A remainder of a long ago battle, this fortified watch tower bears a heavy coating of rust. It has been knocked somewhat off kilter by a nearby heavy explosion with debris piled against one side. The entry hatch hangs by one hinge and the tower's surface is pockmarked by weapons damage.

This piece stands about 6-1/4 inches (160 mm) tall. The base is approximately 4" x 4" (100 mm x 100 mm).

Storage Tank with Battle Damage

Another industrial piece, a large vertical storage tank. This one has obvious signs that a firefight has taken place in the area.

The tank bears the scars of combat, with multiple rounds piercing the shell and allowing some of the contents to leak out.

This piece stands approximately 4" in height. The base is 6" x 6".

Remote Gun Turrets

These gun turrets are unmanned weapons hardpoints. They are normally controlled from a remote fire control center, but can also contain their own AI fire control technology. The three pictured here sport a variety of weapons systems.

Great for use as perimeter defense weapons around military installations, research stations and major population centers. The turrets are designed so that the upper gun mounts actually rotate in a full 360° circle.

The turrets measure approximately 3" in height with a base of 3" x 3". They are somewhat scale-independent and easily could be used in a variety of scales ranging from 15mm to 30mm.

Chronosphere Time Machine

Our adventurer climbs inside the metal sphere, closing and securing the portal hatch. Minutes later, a deep humming emanates from the machine. The air appears to shimmer around the sphere. Then, in a blink of an eye, the chronosphere disappears from sight, carrying it's occupant across the temporal seas!

This piece is best used in a Victorian Science Fiction or Pulp setting, although it also could be used in a Steampunk world. Access is via a circular hatch. Two viewing portals allow the travelers a peek at their new surroundings.

Stands about 4" tall and 3-1/2" wide.

Industrial Processing Plant

Here is my latest terrain piece. It represents an industrial processing plant with a 2-story main processing building with multiple levels. A large exhaust chimney rises above the building. An overhead catwalk leads to a vertical storage tank.

A smaller, horizontal tank lies along one side of the main building, holding chemicals used in the manufacturing process.

The overall piece measures about 12" by 6".

Makes a nice victory objective in any science fiction table top wargame such as Warhammer 40K as well as Pulp action games.
